Explain rationale behind fare GR: Court to state 29.7.2014 Asian Age: Mumbai
The Bombay high court on Monday asked the state government to explain the underlying principle behind the government resolution (GR) fixing new minimum fare for taxis and auto rickshaws. The government, in 2012, fixed Rs 18 and Rs 14 as minimum fare for taxis and autos respectively. Following a strike by taxi and auto unions, these were hiked to Rs 19 and Rs 15. The government’s case is that the hike was due as the last one came two years ago. The division bench of Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice A.S. Chandurkar asked the government on what basis it arrived at the figures of Rs 18 and Rs 14, as the Hakim committee formed by it had recommended a different fare structure. On this, advocate general Darius Khambata said he needed to take instructions from the government. Accepting his request the judges asked him to file an affidavit after taking instructions and posted the matter for hearing on August 4. The judges were hearing a PIL filed by consumer rights body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, through its lawyer ...
