Have ensured level playing field for panchayat polls: SEC to HC 19.4.2018 General News
Refuting the Oppositions' allegations that it was working at the behest of the ruling TMC, the State Election Commission (SEC) today told the Calcutta High Court that it has taken all steps to ensure a level playing field for the upcoming panchayat elections. The poll panel made the submission to Justice Subrata Talukdar, who has stayed the election process while adjudicating a bunch of pleas challenging the Commission's recent order withdrawing the extension of the deadline for filing nomination papers by candidates. School where Kalam studied goes without electricity 19.4.2018 General News
The school where former President APJ Abdul Kalam began his education has gone without electricity for the past two days with supply being snapped owing to non-payment of consumption charges. Power supply to the Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School (No.1) was disconnected by the electricity department as the local body had not paid bill dues for over two years, education department officials said today. The late 'Missile Man', a native of this island, had studied in the school, when it was an elementary school decades ago. Officials said the Panchayat Union had to pay arrears to the tune of Rs 10,500 per year which had accumulated for over two years and hence they were forced to disconnect supply. Panchayat Union officials said the dues would be settled immediately and electricity would restored by tomorrow. Students of the middle school, where Kalam had inaugurated a library and a computer room in January 2011, were put to hardship due to lack of power supply. This is .

The Supreme Court rejecting pleas seeking a probe into judge B H Loya's death triggered a slugfest between the Congress and the BJP today with the ruling party alleging an "invisible hand" behind the petitions and the opposition party accusing it of making "false political capital" by "misinterpreting" the apex court order. The CPI(M) termed the court order as "unfortunate" and demanded a review by a larger bench. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said there was no reason to doubt the statements of four judges on circumstances leading to the judge's death and the scrutiny of documents established the death was due to natural cause. The Congress also dared the government to order an independent investigation and asked why it was shying away from it if judge Loya's death was natural. Congress President Rahul Gandhi hit out at BJP chief Amit Shah saying truth will catch up with him. "Indians are deeply intelligent. Most Indians, ...
