'Trigon' triggers new hope among Pavoor Uliya islanders 22.4.2017 deccanherald.com
It was way back in 1968, the spectre of mass eviction was looming large on 50 and odd families at Pavoor Uliya island on the outskirts of Mangaluru. However, a chapel, named Infant Jesus Chapel, was built to keep the flock of majority Christian population together, dissuading them from falling prey to any such rehabilitation packages from the government. Four decades have elapsed and yet there is no sign of authorities refraining from shifting the left over 38 families here. However, their demand for adequate basic facilities, mainly bridge connecting Uliya Pavoor and Adyar, remains a pipe dream. In the absence of surface transport, rowing boat is the only mode of transportation, ferrying people from either side, indeed with danger lurking as and when the water level at river Netravathi brims, mainly during monsoon. Now, the dwellers have found a ray of hope in 'Trigon', a 14-member team of engineering students, a mix of civil engineering and mechanical, from Sahyadri College of Engineering and ...

Chikkamagaluru reels under severe drought 22.4.2017 deccanherald.com
The district is moving into a never-before state of water shortage. Drought has taken a toll on the coffee, pepper, arecanut and coconut crops. All the water bodies, including borewells, have dried up. The residents have been depending on the water supplied through tankers. The rainfall in the recent days has, naturally, failed to come to the rescue of the standing crops. Owing to deficit south-west monsoon, the state government had declared Chikkamagaluru, Mudigere, Kadur and NR Pura taluks as drought-affected. Deficit north-east monsoon had led the state government to declared Chikkamagaluru, Koppa, Kadur, NR Pura and Tarikere as drought-hit taluks. Shortfall in rain From January 1 to December 31, 2016, the district should have received 1,757.1 mm rainfall. However, the district received only 1192.9 mm rainfall, thus 32% deficit. Kalasapura, Lakya, Ambale hobli, Kadur taluk received the lowest rainfall. The farmers are struggling to save the livestock in the plateau region of Chikkamagaluru taluk and ...
